“Communication:
Channel for Hope” was the announced theme for the first Fukuoka
Art Trienniale, a regional art exhibition held in Fukuoka, Japan in
the spring of 1999. In advance of a visit by the curators of this
exhibition, several contemporary artists in Phnom Penh prepared work
based specifically on this theme. Since it was one of the few times
that artists in Phnom Penh made several pieces at once, we decided
to show their work in the front foyer of what was then Kids Internet
Cafe. We named the foyer Situations since it was a time that the political
"situation" had virtually paralysed activities of any sort.
We presented all the work prepared for the Fukuoka curators. Artists
presenting work included Svay Ken, Prom Sam An, Phy Chan Than, Long
Sophea, Hor Kim Srean, and Soeung Vannara.
